Dear South Whidbey Staff, Students and Families,

South Whidbey School District is moving back to Fully Remote- 100% Distance Learning Plus (level two on our dial) effective Monday November 30th through January 11, 2021.

This morning, after meeting with the Island County Department of Public Health and speaking with Superintendents from the region, and the South Whidbey Administration and Leadership team, we decided South Whidbey must return to 100% distance learning for the protection of our staff, students and community.

This is very difficult for all of us to hear and it is especially hard for families as we all want our children in school for their well being emotionally. I am extremely sad to have to move backwards in our progress towards reopening in person for all. We are living in a time of great loss and I am concerned about the mental and emotional health of our students and families. At the same time, COVID is leaving us no choice. Despite all of our precautions as a community and school district we are seeing an exponential rise in cases all around us.

In South Whidbey, our numbers have almost doubled. In the last four weeks, Clinton went from 10 to 17 positive cases, Freeland from 11 to 19 positive cases, Langley from 11 to 18 positive cases. I learned of cases arising in local businesses. We also have staff and students that are in quarantine.  I was informed that due to these high numbers, the Island County COVID testing is now being limited to only those who have actual symptoms. This is a return to our March limitations. It is expected that these numbers will continue to double over the next few weeks due to the holidays and the close proximity people have to each other.  This alarming news, forces us to take the utmost precautions and move back to working remotely.

I am encouraging ALL staff who are able to work remotely to do so. We are going back to remote instruction to protect our staff and our students by reducing contact as much as possible.

Grab and Go School Meals will continue till the winter break and will return on January 4, 2021.

All Student and Family Support services will continue:

We understand that this will cause extreme difficulty for some families and students. We struggled with this decision and will continue to serve our students remotely in every way possible.
