2013-2019 Levy Projects

In February of 2013, the voters in South Whidbey School District approved a six (6) year capital & technology levy. This levy provides $2 million per year to fund ongoing technology efforts, deferred maintenance and other capital improvements throughout the district.

This page provides details on past and future technology levy projects.

1:1 Student Computing

From 2013 to 2017, the technology department purchased and deployed enough computing devices to cover a 1:1 computer to student ratio. Our deployment model is classroom based opposed to student based. This means we have devices that stay in classrooms during teachers planning time. Each classroom has received a charging cart or cabinet with enough devices for their class.

  • 1300 Chromebooks
  • 60 Science Laptops
  • 300 iPads
  • 2 CTE labs (desktops)

Continuing in 2018 and beyond, we are starting our first cycle of replacements due to obsolete iPads and Chromebooks. We plan on maintaining our current 1:1 ratio through a predictable refresh cycle.

LMS Gym Sound Systems

In 2014-2015, we installed two new sound systems in the LMS Gym and LMS Multi-purpose Room for use during class and assemblies.

In 2017 when we closed LMS, the multi-purpose room sound system was moved to the HS Auxiliary Gym and Mat Room. Middle School sports teams still use the LMS gym and the sound system.

HS Main Gym Sound System

Along with capital projects, the HS main gym sound system was upgraded to match the new systems in the rest of our athletic areas. See more information on the 2017-2018 Capital Projects Levy page.

VoIP Phone System

In the summer of 2013, we replaced our aging digital phone system with a new Shoretel VoIP system. This cut our overall phone bill and will eventually pay for itself in savings.

1:1 Wireless, Network Upgrades

Over the course of the levy, we have increased our wireless access point density to 1 AP per classroom and increased our density in our multi-use areas. In 2018, we completely replaced our WiFi system with a new Aruba system to replace our discontinued HP system.

Each switch in our network was also upgraded as part of the VoIP installation (to provide Power of Ethernet), wireless upgrades, video camera installation or 10Gbit backbone projects.

We have additionally added more battery capacity to each of our network distribution points to keep us running during short power outages.

Staff Computing Replacement

Starting in 2015, we upgraded all teaching staff and administrators to laptops. Each staff member received a laptop, external monitor, docking station, wireless keyboard and mouse.

Large Format Display - Projectors

From 2016-2017 we replaced every projector and SmartBoard with new HD interactive projectors. Our old fleet was going on 8+ years on average.

Digital Signage in Schools

We added student managed Digital Signage TVs in each of our buildings. High School signs advertise upcoming events such as sports games and spirit weeks along with information related to our student store. The recently closed LMS now has signs that advertise community events and partners as well as digital copies of old graduating class photos.
